From material to music: How strings can solve sound and response challenges

Expanding the range of musical expression is the quest of every musician. Strings play an important role in this: they can liberate or limit the sound, they can cure or cause problems. In this presentation we will share advice and background knowledge for optimising and taking care of your string setup, based on our 100+ years of pioneering work in the field.

Philip  Zupancic is a cellist and a physicist with a PhD in quantum science. After academic research at Harvard, Cambridge and ETH Zurich, and some years as a technology consultant to enterprises and public agencies, he now combines his passions for music and technology in his role as string developer at Thomastik-Infeld.

Bernhard Rieger combined a technical education in mechatronics with studies of double bass in Vienna. After a year at AKG Mikrophones he joined Thomastik-Infeld’s development department 25 years ago. Since then he has been responsible for all new cello and double bass strings and now leads the string development department. As musician he played freelance with professional orchestras in Vienna including the Vienna State Opera for many years.
